Traffic Lights at Willett Arms junction
July 20th, 2008 by davidbrown
At the last Area Meeting an agreement was reached for the installation of traffic lights and a right turn from Oakley Lane onto Oakley Hill.
This will ease traffic flow out of Oakley Lane and will reduce u-turns at the nearby A31 roundabout.
The aim is that this will also speed up the bus connections to Wimborne, and will be implemented during the Canford Bridge closure.
Merley First School Safety Zone
July 20th, 2008 by davidbrownThere was overwhelming support from your local councillors at the last Area Meeting for there to be a 20mph. zone around Merley First School. A large part of Harrier Drive, Oakley Straight and Sopwith Crescent will have parking restrictions within this zone, and there will be zone warning signs installed.
These signs will be large enough for the children at the school to design interesting artworks. So children – get busy.
Your Ward Councillors will be holding a consultation review at 6pm on Wednesday 25th July at The Lantern Lounge in Merley.
Speed Limit Reductions on Arrowsmith Road, Magna Road and Gravel Hill
July 20th, 2008 by davidbrown
After much pressure from your local ward councillors, the MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, and the residents of Arrowsmith Road to reduce the speed limit approaching the dwellings to 30 mph, the review of speed limits for local roads was put before the Council’s Transport Advisory Group recently.
The police explained that they did not have sufficient resources to monitor speed limits below 40 mph in this area and would oppose the motion. The group considered that to have various speed limits along that road would confuse motorists.
The outcome was that the statutory speed limit for the Gravel Hill end of Arrowsmith Road would be 40 mph. The rest of Arrowsmith Road will now be 30 mph.
Magna Road
At the same Transport Advisory Group an extension of the 30 mph speed limit from the Bearcross roundabout to just past the Bearwood post office was approved due to the volume of traffic along Magna Road.
Lower Gravel Hill
The group also approved an extension of the 40 mph speed limit from the roundabout at Darby’s Corner to just past the roundabout at the crematorium, due to the volume and speed of traffic along the lower Gravel Hill.
Please therefore be aware that new signs will appear on these roads in the very near future.
Progress on Buses
October 1st, 2007 by davidbrownAnnette Brooke MP and Councillors Peter Maiden, Daphne Long and David Brown have at last made some headway in negotiations with Poole Council and the Bus Companies over the ongoing bus problems in Sopwith Crescent.
Pressure from your Lib Dem representatives and local residents has resulted in some action from the Borough of Poole. The Council are investigating with the Bus Company as to whether one flyer per hour could be re-routed onto a new loop to cover Wimborne, Oakley Hill, Quenn Anne Drive, Merley Lane/Sopwith Crescent, Oakley Straight and Canford Magna, back along Queen Anne Drive and back to Wimborne.
“Hopefully this proposal will be adopted by the Council and Bus Company. We will continue to work towards this solution with Annette Brooke MP,” said Cllr Peter Maiden.
We are also putting pressure on the Council to provide newer buses for the 32 service with a step free entrance, which will be of easier use for those with walking disabilities,” said Cllr Daphne Long.
Walk to school - volunteers needed
October 1st, 2007 by davidbrownAn appeal for volunteers has been made by Merley First School, who need more volunteers to keep their walk to school programme running.
Annette Brooke MP, Liberal Democrat Childrens Spokesperson, joined the school during the International Walk to School week in October last year, which aims to encourage community safety and reduce congestion and carbon emissions by getting children and parents out of their cars.
40 Countries participated last year and this October, there is an international walk to school month. However Merley First School needs more volunteers if the programme is to keep going in the long run.
“If you are interested in helping with the activity in Merley, please contact Councillor Peter Maiden on 888608,” said Annette.

Merley First School Car Parking Update
October 1st, 2007 by davidbrownCouncillors Peter Maiden, Daphne Long and David Brown reported in the last Focus about parking problems around Harrier Drive. The area suffers from a lack of available spaces at school pick-up and drop off time. Local residents have complained that their drives are being obstructed and cars are parking in dangerous places when dropping off school children.
Following a petition from residents of Harrier Drive, Annette Brooke MP attended the Council’s Transport Advisory Group in July which discussed these parking problems. Aftre presentations from a resident and from Cllr David Brown, the council has decided to carry out a review of the perking and traffic situation around Merley First School. This has been prioritised for action as soon as possible during 2008/09. In the mean time, local PC Stephen Hawke will be issuing tickets for any dangerous parking in the area.
New Speed Indicator Device (SID) installed
July 1st, 2007 by davidbrownA new 30mph SID was installed along Knights Road in May after lobbying from your local Lib Dem team on behalf of concerned residents. We hope it will encourage people to stop speeding near the junctions with De Courtenai Close, Crusader Road and King Richard Drive.
